[It is almost dark now, and Pinkerton
leads Butterfly towards the house]


Evening is falling

With shadows and quiet.

And you are here alone.

Alone and renounced!

[Pinkerton claps his hands, the servants
come in and Pinkerton orders:]


You, close it

[the servants silently slide the walls across]

[with deep feeling to Pinkerton]
Yes, we are all alone
The world is outside.

[laughing] and the furious priest.

[to Suzuki, who has come in with the
servants is awaiting orders]

Suzuki, my clothes.

[Suzuki rummages in a trunk and gives
Butterfly her night attire and a small box
with toiletries. The servants leave.
Butterfly goes into the house, where
Suzuki assists her preparations for the
night. She changes into a white bridal
gown, then does her hair. Suzuki leaves.]


I can’t undo this showy sash
The bride now dons her spotless white.

Her movements as delicate as a squirrel’s
She loosens and undoes the knots.

Talking softly to himself
He smiles and watches me.

To think that little toy
is my wife! My wife!

If only I could hide!
Oh he makes me blush so!

[smiling] But her charm is so alluring,
That I am consumed by a sudden
… fever of desire.

And still the angry voice is cursing me.

Butterfly, renounced.
Renounced and happy.

[rising, he draws closer to Butterfly,
raises her gently, and goes out with her
on the terrace.]

the white of your veil.

I am like the Goddess of the Moon
the little Moon-Goddess who comes down
by night from the bridge of heaven.

That soothe ardent desire?

[Pinkerton draws close to Butterfly and
takes her face in his hands. Butterfly, with
a sudden movement, withdraws herself
from Pinkerton's ardent embrace]

[Butterfly has a sudden panic and puts her
hands to her ears, as though she still heard
her relatives shouting; then reassured, she
once more turns to Pinkerton.]


You are tall and strong!

And you say things that I’ve never heard before.
Now I am happy.

[It is now quite dark, and the sky is clear
and full of stars. Butterfly moves slowly
towards Pinkerton who is sitting on a bench
in the garden. She kneels at his feet and
looks at him tenderly, almost pleadingly.]

A love to suit a child like me.
Love me please.
We are people accustomed
to little things,
humble and quiet,
to a tenderness which is
gentle, and yet as wide
as the sky, as deep as the

[taking her hands again gently,
